This morning, there were several bluejays outside our house. We didn't think too much of it, since we've seen them around before. However, later that afternoon a beautiful female perched on a tree branch just a few feet from me and was chattering quietly at me for a while before she flew down to where our bikes are chained up. I looked down and saw this wee baby bluejay hopping around trying to get out of the window well, but he couldn't get up high enough. I immediately understood that Mama was asking for help.
I rushed downstairs and got the baby out of the window well, but I didn't know what to do next. At first, I thought that getting him back to his nest would be most appropriate until I witnessed how actively he was hopping around. I spoke with a wildlife rehabilitation expert to make sure I was doing what was best for this bird family, and indeed all I needed to do was get him out of his predicament and make sure Mama and Papa didn't abandon him. They didn't, so all is well, and this young fledgling will hop around for a week or so until he learns to fly.
It is worth mentioning that, while I held this little baby, it dozed off in my hand. My heart!!
A bluejay's friendship cannot be bought with food, as is the case with our raven friends. It must be earned. This mama asked for help, and I helped. It took me a bit to figure out the right way, but I got there in the end.
I think the bluejay has always been one of my favorite birds. I feel so honored that Mama allowed me the opportunity to help her family.
